Catching Up

We have been very busy recently, mostly in the Denver area visiting friends and having fun with them. So this post will be about the fact that we have been catching up with them but also catching you up with what we've been doing.

First of all, speaking of catching up, we had a request from a loyal reader asking about our cats. I had mentioned them in a post and this reader wanted to know how they are doing. Well, as cats are prone to do, they sleep a lot. When we are home they are indoor-outdoor cats but while we are travelling they never leave the RV. They don't want to. Home is very quiet and very well known to them. We don't have many visitors back in the woods so they are not used to people and cars coming and going. When they do, Millie and Mollie, if they are outside, find a safe place to observe. They are skeptical of people they don't know.

When we first started travelling with them last year we bought harnesses and leashes and even a screened enclosure, taking them outside the RV to see if they would like it. NOT. Being in a campground with many other campers and RVs and cars moving about, or people walking by our campsite made them very nervous and they wanted back in the RV.

We are OK with this. They never try to get out which means we don't have to be paranoid about where they are. So what do they do? They look out the windows and watch the wildlife and people come and go from a safe place. And they sleep.

From the San Luis valley, we made our way from southern Colorado up the Arkansas River valley, first to Twin Lakes then on to Leadville. Twin Lakes is one of the prettiest areas in this part of Colorado. We spent one night there at over 9,000 feet. From Twin Lakes we went on to Leadville, the highest city in the US at 10,154 feet. The mornings were very chilly (just above freezing) and we had to run the propane heater.

Then there is the catching up we did with many of our Denver-area friends. First, we had a delightful visit with Brian and Eileen on the east side of the metro area. While there we took a day trip with them to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Below, Brian is taking a picture of Long's Peak first successfully climbed by John Wesley Powell in 1868. It is 14,259 feet at the summit.

We then visited Mike and Kari in southern Denver near Bear Creek State Park. While there we took bike rides along the Bear Creek trail. Denver, and Colorado in general, is one of the bike-friendliest places I have ever been in.

We also spent some time in downtown Denver on the 16th Street Mall.

...and in the art district around 26th Street and Larimer where there are street art paintings on building walls, especially in the alleys. In the picture below you can see we were not the only ones admiring the art.

This on is a bit self-referential. Notice the figure to the left - a woman with her arm in the air with what appears to be a can of spray paint.

We also took a day trip to Guanella Pass west of Denver.

Mt. Bierstadt is to the right at 14,060 feet. The pass itself is 11,669 feet and connects the towns of Grant and Georgetown.

Our time in Denver with our friends was very satisfying and brought us closer again to people we don't get to see very often. We hated to leave them.
